Sustainability

Born out of a desire to create ethically conscious bohemian-inspired keepsakes that stands the test of time, Harni is dedicated to making positive and actionable change that helps both people and the planet.

All elements, from design, product to packaging is considered to ensure we leave the planet in a better place and raise as much awareness as we can in the process.

DESIGN CENTRIC

Our sustainability journey begins at the design stage where we consider all elements from fabric use, trims, sampling and seasonality. At Harni, we value transeasonal and lasting design elements that give our pieces longevity, with the belief that no garment should be designed to be worn once.

OUR MAKERS

Our garments are made by our international partners. Our relationships have been established over many years, creating respectful collaboration between our designers and international production teams. We work with reputable makers and commit to mutually beneficial processes and outcomes. Our garments are never mass produced, instead we create for demand. Where possible, sustainable practices, initiatives and packaging are in place. We are proactively working to evolve further as we believe that you can always be better and do better.

Our international production teams are audited and regularly checked for compliance by worldwide accredited responsible auditors such as WRAP, SGS, BSCI.

Taking a proactive approach, once global travel is permitted, we intend on visiting international production teams regularly to ensure strict ethical protocols are honoured.

OUR FABRICS

Our fabrics are an important element in our sustainability and environmentally friendly efforts. Our ranges are made from natural fibres, including organic cotton, hemp, linen and rayon.

100% ORGANIC COTTON

A natural fibre which is 100% biodegradable, 100% organic cotton is an environmentally friendly fabric that’s extremely durable, breathable and hypoallergenic. Organic cotton farming uses 62% less energy than conventional cotton. Natural organic cotton uses 91% less water as it is most commonly grown in rain-fed areas and produces 46% less CO2 than conventional cotton. Certified organic cotton yarn is produced in compliance with organic agricultural standards. It puts people and the planet first by using only natural and sustainable processes.

LINEN

Long-lasting and gentle on the skin, linen is made from fibres of the flax plant making it one of the most sustainable fabrics available. The flax plant is incredibly resilient, requires very little water and can grow in poor soil. Linen is also recyclable and biodegradable.

HEMP

Considered an environmental super fibre, hemp is one of the strongest and most durable of all-natural fibres. As a renewable resource, it takes as little as 100 days to cultivate and requires minimal water resources to produce significantly more fibre per acre compared to other popular fibres. It supplies its own nutrients to the soil, which replenishes its fertility, needing no toxic chemicals, pesticides and insecticides in order to grow. It is also a biodegradable fibre.

RAYON

Rayon is a breathable fibre made from regenerated wood pulp – a manmade renewable plant material that is a natural fibre with a silk-like aesthetic and a soft drape. In addition, it uses half the energy to produce than other fibres like cotton, further reducing our environmental impact.

PACKAGING

Compostable mailers and Biodegradable polybags will be used to ship our products.  In addition, our swing tags, boxes and tapes are made from recycled and biodegradable materials.

COLLATERAL

All our materials are printed on 100% recycled paper.
